In the world of sci-fi humor, it's possible to go very, very wrong. Fortunately, in the Way of the Empty Gripper , Jon Stonger a good friend of mine goes very, very right.
This is a very enjoyable mish-mash of genres, from space opera to slapstick to adventure story to kung fu story to farce to satire. Everything takes a good hit here, from the absurdity of common sci-fi tropes like faster than light travel, ninjas, travel agents and tourists. At the center of it all is the clueless Captain Dave and Egbert, his self-aware luggage who's really the hero of the story.
It's fast paced, full of action and humor - both slapstick and subtle. For example, I laughed equally at both the clumsiness of the "deadly ninja assassin" who has no balance and the more subtle bits of humor, such as references to the Resistance movement on the Planet Ohm.
All in all, this is nerd humor at its finest. Along with his decedent friend Dante, John makes a brave escape, only to fall straight down to Hell and into the arms of Rimmon, a handsome incubus.

This is the second book I finished this week, simply because I couldn't put it down. Jay Bell has drafted a interesting, page-turning book that tours not only the traditional afterlife, but also the afterlives of many different religions as the protagonist, John Grey, works on behalf of Hell to unite all of the varied human pantheons in a war against Heaven to liberate the souls trapped in Purgatory.
As someone whose studied different religions, I can tell that Jay did his homework. He's not the first author who imagines that people go to different afterlives when they die - in many ways, this book reminds of of Robert Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice. But Bell's clearly done his homework.
Moreover, this book paints a generous picture of religion - something that's all too rare in fantasy these days. In Bell's vision, the gods truly love their followers, and work with and guide humans to happiness.
I really enjoyed that. This is a terrific read.
A completely new approach to the ethics of Ayn Rand! Why Ayn Rand Is Wrong and Why It Matters lays out three arguments against Ayn Rand's doctrine of rational self-interest, all revolving around the meaning of the word "self". A naive and contradictory psychological understanding of the meaning of "self", according to Asher, is the weak link in Ayn Rand's chain of premises. The author also argues that Ayn Rand's ideas deserve more respect and regard than they currently receive within the larger philosophy community, and suggests that those who disagree with her tend to rely on insult and caricature rather than reason and logic in their challenge to Objectivist dogma.
Levi Asher -- like Ayn Rand, a lay philosopher who loves a structured debate -- hopes this innovative book will help bring about a better dialogue between the many smart people around the world who believe in Ayn Rand, and the many smart people who don't. I've actually only barely started reading this, but it caught my eye because of its ambition.
There are very few critical works of Ayn Rand out there, which I think is a shame because she is very influential in today's culture.
